From today, the Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) in London is being expanded.
It now covers every London borough, although the M25 is not in the zone. Drivers (including residents) will pay £12.50 a day to enter the zone if their cars do not meet minimum emissions levels.
Which cars are affected?
Petrol cars registered before 2006, and diesel cars registered before October 2015 will likely not meet standards, so drivers must pay the daily charge to enter the zone.
No charge applies if your car meets the new emissions standards. In addition, disabled drivers will be entitled to a grace period until 2027.

What is the Ultra Low Emissions Zone?
For those who live and work in polluted areas, emissions from transport can increase the risk of health conditions such as asthma, heart attacks and strokes. The ULEZ was launched in April 2019 to cut pollution in Central London by 15 per cent and improve public health. Evidence shows that emissions have fallen, which has led the Mayor to extend the zone to every London Borough.
You can be charged at any time, every day, except on Christmas Day.
You must pay by midnight on the third day following the journey. Failure to pay the ULEZ charge can result in a penalty charge notice of £180, reduced to £90 if the fee is paid within 14 days.

Time for a new car?
If your car is affected, and you’re likely to enter the ULEZ regularly, it may be worth considering a new car. A new Arnold Clark Personal Contract Hire car can make the cost to change lower than you might imagine.
In addition, the Mayor has also launched a Scrappage Scheme designed to help Londoners scrap older vehicles.
